The 49th meeting of the State Managing Committee for Ex-Servicemen Welfare and the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund was held in Guwahati on September 14, 2026, under the chairmanship of Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
The meeting discussed various issues concerning the welfare and rehabilitation of ex-servicemen, Veer Naris/Matas and their dependants across Assam. The committee reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of veterans who have rendered dedicated service to the nation.
Among the key issues discussed were welfare measures for veterans and their dependants, mobilisation of donations for the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, entrepreneurial skill development initiatives, provision of modified scooters and medical aid to needy beneficiaries, and proposals for a secure centralised database management system and a paperless regional application system for veterans. Government schemes available to ex-servicemen and their families were also reviewed.
The meeting was attended by Lt Gen R P Kalita, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd), Air Marshal Anjan Gogoi, PVSM, VSM, AVSM (Retd), Syed Isfaqur Rahman, IAS, Secretary, Government of Assam, and Maj Gen A K Sharma, VSM, GOC 51 Sub Area, among others.
The committee emphasised that an ex-serviceman’s contribution does not end with retirement from active service. Their experience, discipline and skills continue to be valuable assets to society, and appropriate opportunities should be created for their participation in nation-building and community development.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya appreciated the efforts of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam, for its continued work for the welfare of more than two lakh members of the veteran community in the state.
Brig Polash Choudhury, SM, Director, Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to working collectively for the legitimate interests of ex-servicemen and their families. He also urged district and local ex-servicemen associations to remain united and extend their cooperation in strengthening welfare initiatives for veterans.
