Doctors Urge Precautions as Influenza A Cases Climb Alongside COVID-19 Reports

Medical experts are reporting a visible, widespread increase in Influenza A infections, prompting healthcare professionals to urge the public to adopt sensible precautions and wear masks outdoors. The alert gained traction after Mumbai-based surgeon Dr. Amit Thadani highlighted an ongoing, “almost epidemic-like” wave of Influenza A on a scale he had not previously seen in the city. This spike in respiratory illnesses coincides with fresh COVID-19 cases being reported in Andhra Pradesh, where two deaths and eight active cases were recently recorded. Dr. Manas Mengar, a senior pulmonology consultant at KIMS Hospitals Thane, confirmed the surge, explaining that while the flu typically peaks during the monsoon and winter months, the current spread has been wider than expected due to a combination of changing weather, frequent travel, crowded indoor spaces, and lowered individual immunity.

Doctors stress that while healthy individuals usually recover from Influenza A within five to seven days with rest and hydration, vulnerable groups—including senior citizens, pregnant women, young children, and those with chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease—face a much higher risk of severe complications like pneumonia. Because COVID-19 and Influenza A share highly overlapping symptoms like high fever, body aches, sore throat, dry cough, and extreme fatigue, experts note that clinical diagnosis alone is nearly impossible and advise high-risk individuals to seek early testing and professional medical advice rather than self-medicating. To curb transmission, pulmonologists recommend prioritizing seasonal influenza vaccinations and practicing basic hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing, maintaining good ventilation, and wearing masks in crowded indoor public spaces.
