Kaziranga Reopens for New Tourism Season, Forest Worker Injured in Rhino Attack

Kaziranga National Park has reopened to tourists for the 2026-27 tourism season, with Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah formally inaugurating the season at the Kohora Range in the presence of Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and senior Forest Department officials.

Jeep safari services have resumed across the park, while elephant safaris are expected to restart within the next 10 to 20 days after the completion of necessary preparations.

Expressing optimism about the upcoming season, Mallabaruah said booking trends have been encouraging and voiced confidence that tourist arrivals would surpass last year’s figures. The Forest and Tourism Departments are also planning joint initiatives to improve tourism infrastructure, upgrade existing facilities, and introduce new attractions to enhance visitor experiences.

Authorities are further working on developing tourism circuits linking Kaziranga with nearby destinations, encouraging visitors to spend more time in the region and creating additional economic opportunities for local communities.

However, the reopening day was overshadowed by a rhinoceros attack that left a forest official injured while on duty. The incident occurred at the Bhaichamari Forest Camp under the Bagori Forest Range.

The injured forest worker, identified as Pradip Barua, was rescued from the site and rushed to the Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital for treatment. Further details regarding his condition were not immediately available.
