A training programme titled ‘Disaster Management and Awareness’ was held on 6th August at the premises of Paschim Guwahati College. The programme was organized by the college’s National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell and the Department of Political Science, in collaboration with the 1st National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Battalion based at Patgaon, Azara.
The programme began with a welcome address by the college Principal, Dr. Manisha Bhattacharya. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of such training in a disaster-prone state like Assam and its relevance in the present times.
The programme was anchored by Assistant Professors of the Department of Political Science, Ziaur Rahman and Ayushman Kalita. More than 70 NSS volunteers participated in the programme under the leadership of Dr. Jintu Gohain, Programme Officer of the college’s NSS Cell and Associate Professor.
As resource persons in the training programme, Inspector Prabin Phukan, Deepti Sonowal, Ranjumoni Hazarika and R.D. Gurjar from the 1st NDRF participated. They provided basic training on techniques to rescue and shift affected people to safe places after natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides and man-made disasters. They also trained participants on precautions to be taken during disasters and on providing first aid to the injured.
