SAI Naharlagun Dominates State-Level Taekwondo Championships

The Sports Authority of India, Naharlagun, has etched its name on the winner’s trophy at the 29th Kyorugi and 11th Poomsae State-Level Taekwondo Championship. The high-octane event, which concluded this Sunday in the West Kameng district, saw over 600 athletes from 20 districts competing for top honors. Beyond the medals, the championship carried a powerful social message, urging the youth of Arunachal Pradesh to embrace sports over substance abuse.

The SAI team delivered a commanding performance to secure the overall championship title, finishing with a total of 18 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Capital Complex followed closely as the runner-up with 16 gold and 10 silver medals, while Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA) took the third spot. Individual excellence was also in the spotlight, with SAI’s Wangkop Mophuk and Tangu Tali being named the best male athletes in the Kyorugi and Poomsae categories, respectively.

The closing ceremony was graced by Rupa ADC Lobsang Tseten and retired Sports Director DK Dinglow, both of whom lauded the Arunachal Taekwondo Association for fostering a robust martial arts culture. During the event’s opening, Kalaktang MLA Tseten Chombay highlighted the state’s growing reputation in international Taekwondo, emphasizing that such platforms are crucial for developing discipline and national-level talent.

A significant highlight of the tournament was its social advocacy under the slogan ‘Drugs Chhoro, Khel Se Jodo’. Officials and guests reiterated the importance of sports as a tool to steer the younger generation away from drug addiction and toward positive physical activities. As the curtains fall on this year’s championship, the success of the participants from all 20 districts reflects a bright future for martial arts in the region, strengthening the spirit of sportsmanship across the state.
