Two new plant species have been discovered in Vijoynagar in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district.
Notably, one of the newly discovered species has been named as ‘Ophiorrhiza pemae’ after Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
The other species has been named ‘Ophiorrhiza shidiensis’.
I sincerely thank the research team for naming one of these newly discovered plant species, Ophiorrhiza pemae, in my name. My sincere gratitude to the entire research team for this special recognition and for their valuable work in documenting Arunachal Pradesh’s rich natural heritage,” Khandu said in a post on X.
Congratulating the researchers, Khandu said the discovery would enhance scientific understanding of the region’s distinctive plant diversity and underscore Arunachal Pradesh’s rich natural heritage.
“Congratulations to Krishna Chowlu, Renthlei Lalnunfeli and Dr. Vinay Kumar Sahani on the remarkable discovery,” he added.
Both the species belong to the Rubiaceae family and were discovered during botanical surveys in the region by the three researchers.
