The Arunachal Pradesh Congress has sought greater transparency and constituency-wise scrutiny of the final electoral roll published under the SIR.
The party also asserted that the electorate in the state has fallen by over 21 per cent from the pre-revision figure.
Arunachal Pradesh’s final electoral roll was published on Tuesday with 6.96 lakh voters, a reduction of 1.91 lakh from the pre-SIR count.
The APCC notes that such a substantial change in the electoral roll makes transparency, constituency-wise scrutiny, public accessibility and effective grievance redressal particularly important.
The APCC stated that it recognises that electoral-roll revision is an essential statutory exercise to identify and remove entries that are no longer eligible because of death, permanent shifting, duplication or other legally prescribed grounds, but at the same time, the protection of eligible voters is equally fundamental to the credibility of the electoral process.
“The reduction of more than one-fifth of the pre-SIR electorate warrants careful examination of the available constituency-wise, district-wise and category-wise data, so that every deletion can be accounted for and no eligible citizen is inadvertently excluded,” the APCC stated.
“The APCC therefore believes that publication of the Final Electoral Roll should not mark the end of public scrutiny. Rather, it should provide an important basis for continued verification to ensure that the electoral roll remains accurate, transparent, inclusive and legally compliant,” it added.
