Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added another remarkable achievement to his growing cricket career during the Duleep Trophy.
The 15-year-old became the youngest batter ever to score a fifty in the tournament while turning out for East Zone against Central Zone. He also took on the captaincy role after regular skipper Ishan Kishan suffered a wrist injury.
Sooryavanshi appeared unfazed by both the occasion and the additional responsibility. The Rajasthan Royals star played an attacking innings and maintained his aggressive approach throughout his stay at the crease.
He completed his half-century in just 42 deliveries, smashing five fours and three sixes. With momentum on his side, the youngster appeared capable of converting the innings into a century.
His impressive effort, however, ended when he was dismissed for 92. Although he fell short of three figures, his fifty had already secured a place for him in the Duleep Trophy record books.
At 15 years and 157 days, Sooryavanshi surpassed Laxman Singh’s long-standing record. Singh had previously been the youngest player to score a Duleep Trophy fifty, achieving the feat at 16 years and 23 days in 1969.
The milestone means Sooryavanshi has broken a record that had survived for more than five decades. His 92-run innings also highlighted his growing ability to compete at the senior domestic level.
Adding to his historic day, Sooryavanshi had earlier become the youngest captain in Duleep Trophy history when he stepped in to lead East Zone following Kishan’s injury.
