ITBP Chief’s Confirmation of Ongoing Arunachal Standoff Sparks Major Political Row in New Delhi

The Congress party has mounted a fierce political offensive demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi clarify the status of the India-China border situation in Parliament, following reports of ongoing military face-offs along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh. The opposition’s demands escalated after Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapoor reportedly confirmed that confrontations with Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops have occurred across multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh and remain ongoing. Accusing the Prime Minister of maintaining a deafening silence and displaying political cowardice, senior Congress leaders—including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera—urged the government to convene an all-party briefing, address both houses of Parliament, and explain whether Indian forces still retain full access to pre-May 2020 patrolling points. Kharge strongly criticized Modi’s past diplomatic engagements, characterizing them as ineffective “Hugplomacy” and warning that the continuing standoff, particularly near Taksing and following Corps Commander-level talks at Wacha Damai, poses alarming risks of escalating into major confrontations reminiscent of Doklam or Galwan. Reaffirming that Arunachal Pradesh remains an integral part of India, opposition figures asserted that the Prime Minister’s 2020 remarks following the Galwan clash effectively gave Beijing a “clean chit,” which has compromised national security and weakened India’s strategic leverage along the frontier. While the government and ruling BJP had not immediately issued a formal response to the opposition’s specific charges, Congress leaders insisted that the country deserves complete operational transparency, a time-bound upgrade of ITBP forward capabilities, and an explicit assurance that India’s territorial sovereignty remains uncompromised.
