Severe floods cut off Kurung Kumey, Arunachal MLA stranded amidst chaos

Kurung Kumey district, including its administrative hub Koloriang, has been isolated from the rest of the country following extensive flooding, leaving local MLA Pani Taram stranded amidst the crisis. The Kurung River breached its banks overnight, leading to widespread devastation and severing vital road links to several key areas such as Porsiparlo, Damin, Pania Sang, Sarli, and Polosang within Arunachal Pradesh.

Pani Taram, MLA of the 21st Koloriang constituency, found himself trapped while en route to Koloriang yesterday amid the chaotic flood situation. Local authorities and emergency services are actively engaged in assessing the damage and initiating relief efforts for affected residents. Continuous rainfall over the past five days has exacerbated the flooding, pushing rivers in Namsai district and Wakro circle of Lohit district beyond their danger marks. C J Mannou, an official from the Water Resources Division, issued a warning today highlighting the severe impact on 34 villages across the region.

The overflow of Kamlang River into Barreng River and Tengapani River’s surge into Tiyang River has further compounded the situation, posing significant risks to villages along their banks. Concerns over potential bank erosion have also intensified along Jengthu and Noa-Dehing rivers, adding to the challenges faced by communities in these flood-affected areas.
