Originally slated for a 2026 debut, the timeline for the innovative earbuds—internally code-named B798—shifted primarily due to prolonged development challenges surrounding Apple’s artificial intelligence software. Specifically, engineers required more time to perfect the complex visual AI models necessary for the hardware to reliably identify and interpret objects, locations, and scenes in a user’s immediate environment.
Unlike standard smartphone lenses, the miniature cameras embedded in the stems of these next-generation AirPods are not designed to capture photos or record video. Instead, they function as advanced visual sensors that continuously feed real-time environmental context to a revamped, more capable Siri. This integration will allow users to ask the assistant for contextual reminders, walk-through navigation adjustments, or information about what they are looking at without taking their iPhones out of their pockets. To address potential privacy concerns, Apple plans to incorporate a visible indicator light on the stems that illuminates whenever the sensors actively transmit data.
The delayed audio wearable is now positioned to headline what is shaping up to be Apple’s most expansive hardware showcase ever. The late 2027 rollout will intentionally coincide with a second-generation foldable iPhone and a dramatically redesigned, curved-glass flagship marking the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone. All three premium devices are currently being tested internally alongside the future iOS 28 operating system.
