The Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet has approved the constitution of an empowered high-level committee to guide and coordinate the pre-feasibility report (PFR) survey and related activities for the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Project (SUMP) across Siang and Upper Siang districts. Chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the Cabinet meeting resolved to execute the survey in a transparent, peaceful, and people-centric manner, emphasizing continuous dialogue with local communities and likely project-affected families (PAFs). Declared a National Project by the Central Government in 2008, SUMP holds strategic importance for water and energy security, flood moderation within the Siang-Brahmaputra basin, job creation, and long-term socio-economic growth across the region. Headed by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Ojing Tasing, the newly formed committee includes Chief Minister’s Advisor and Tuting-Yingkiong MLA Alo Libang along with Geku-Mariyang MLA Oni Panyang as key members tasked with facilitating community engagement. Addressing prevailing public concerns, the Cabinet acknowledged that misinformation and disinformation are being actively circulated by certain vested interests to derail the initiatives. However, state leaders reiterated that the peaceful conduct of PFR survey activities relies heavily on sustained, meaningful consultation with residents of both affected districts. The government reaffirmed that local aspirations, welfare, and traditions will remain central during every phase of the project, expressing full confidence that respectful engagement will build mutual consensus and ensure sustainable development. By positioning local stakeholders as key participants in the decision-making process, the administration aims to bridge gaps, dismantle false narratives, and foster regional trust. Officials noted that the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project represents a vital milestone for infrastructure expansion, capable of transforming local economies while safeguarding ecological balances through modern engineering solutions.
